=A black elephant
A black elephant is a cross between a black swan and the elephant in the room. It is the large thing in plain sight that nobody examines.
Thomas Friedman popularised the term in a New York Times column in November 2014, “Stampeding Black Elephants.” He had heard it explained by the investor and environmentalist Adam Sweidan. No one is certain who coined it.
Every essay here takes a belief nobody checks, and checks it.
The thesis
Read the thesisEvery system I’ve been inside runs on beliefs no one checks anymore.

The counter-case, at full strength
High fixed costs. Perishable inventory. Price-sensitive customers. A product that becomes worthless the moment the gate closes. Every textbook explanation of why flying is a bad business is correct.
Every number checked against its source before it goes out

Cedric Atkinson
“Not broken beliefs. Not lies. Beliefs that were reasonable when they were formed and have been carried forward long enough that questioning them feels like questioning the system itself.”
“This is where I write about what happens when someone checks.”
Cedric Atkinson, the thesis, 2026.
